Yesterday I took the kids to the park for our first attempt at Christmas pictures. The sun was too bright, and the wind too blowy, and the playground too attractive. I got some nice cheesy fake smiles, several squinty, hair blown, "My teeth are cold" shots, and then gave up. Rather that ruin the outing, we decided to turn it into a nature walk, hit the playground and head home for lunch. We walked to the big bridge and played "Pooh sticks" for way too long.

And then we found (can you believe it?)a trebuchet at the playground!!!! For those of you not in the know, a trebuchet is a kind of catapult, and Isaacs obsession, before the current and ongoing Viking obsession, was ancient weaponry, especialy catapults, trabuchets and balistas. We actualy own a mini working trebuchet and catapult, so for us, this was a big find.

My only wish was that we could see it in action!! No luck there, so we came home to shoot our little one, and be re-educated (for the billionth time) about ancient weaponry.
Update: Our friend Karel at the taco shop in town knows the owners of the trebuchet, so we are going to see if she can set up a demo for the homeschoolers!

very cool! here's something i admire about you: you refused to let the photo session ruin your outing. this is something i need to learn. my photo sessions usual mean the outing will end up with someone or everyone in tears.
Okay, the weapon thing was definitely a boy-must-see! Where's this at? D and Z would LOVE it!

What park is this at?
The lovely, and well protected, park is just up the street from our house!
Thanks for the reminder. I should be thinking about doing this.
